My spinning adventure goes on ....

I hope your Valentine week-end is sweet and lovely !
Mine was great because I could continue my spinning adventure and it's been going on in an unexpected way.

At the beginning of the year, I've started to spin and since then, I've been spinning as often as I can. I bought a turkish drop spindle and some fibers (Corriedale) to practise doing the drafting and getting the more regular yarn as possible.

This fiber is so soft and easy to work ...

It goes through my fingers and it's so pleasant ...

I have 100 grs of each colour.

And I have 300 gr of the blue one. I already know what to knit with this handspun yarn.

I've spun 77 meters of this blue wool with 100 grs.

I have to improve my technique and my skills !! The yarn is not even enough !!

Mon fil est encore trop irrégulier !

I've got 94 meters with this apricot one for 100 grs ... that's better !! It took me almost 3 hours to spin each skein.

BUT !!!
It's not over !!!

MAIS !!!
Ce n'est pas fini !!!

Two weeks ago, one of my friend told me about an advertisement on the net for a spinning wheel ...
an Ashford traditional single drive spinning wheel ....
for only 50 euro !!!!!

I pestered the seller for getting it ... of course !!!

And of course ......... I've got it !!

et bien sûr ........ je l'ai eu !!

The wheel had to be repaired.
There was a problem with the hub which coming apart leaving the spokes loose and the wheel wobby (thanks to Eric for the repair).

I had to polish it. It needed 3 wax layers.
I had to lubricate it at every joining parts.
In fact, the woman who sold it had not use it for 37 years !

Now the wheel is turning alright.

I had to buy some bobbins and to change the driving cables.

Ready to start the wheel spinning...
started it one week ago with Marine (remember here the woman who spun at the Christmas market in december) who is been practising for longer time.

And ...

On the right of the picture above, this is my first bobbin. The yarn is too much twisted ! That's a terrible work !
On the left, this is the yarn I've spun 5 days later. Still uneven.

On the picture below, the yellow yarn was spun yesterday and it's the last one I've done.
The lilac yarn was spun the day before yesterday.
Can you see the difference ?

The explanation of this difference is that when I spin, I'm feeling more and more easily the drafting. I'm also feeling whenever I have to overcorrect the tension of the wheel as the bobbin is filling up.

Well, this spinning wheel was an amazing bargain that makes my spinning adventure really fantastic !
Indeed, it leads me the way for many woolly projects and for developing my own creativity. There are so many possibilities. It opens up to an unlimited creativity !
I plan to use up all the yarns I already have and then only knitting and crocheting yarns I'll be able to handspun !
Is it a crazy plan ?!
Maybe !
But an exciting one !

But it's not for now ! It's going to set a lot of time because I have a big stock of yarns and above all I must improve my spinning skills and learn so many different ways to spin and to ply. I must practise a lot and try different fleeces and fibers as well.

I hope you're having such crazy projects in mind ...

Thanks you all for stopping by !

Please, Take Care
and
See you soon !

xx

  7. I've always wanted to learn how to spin, and hope to do someday soon. You're really good at it, and I must say that I like a more irregular wool, I find it fun to work and wear - but that's just my personal opinion, of course! : )
May I ask you what did you use to spin before that wonderful wheel you bought??

    1. Hello Valentina, I've never spin before with anything else than a drop spindle. This is the first time I spin with a wheel. These are my first bobbins of handspun yarn of all of my life.

  16. The colours of the fleece are amazing, they remind me of icecream colours! There is such a difference in the thickness as you've been working along. Good for you on trying this new wheel too. I imagine spinning is all about practice and patience. Your new spinning wheel is the style that I have. I don't know how old my wheel is, but I'm ashamed to say I've never tried spinning, and I've pushed into storage in the basement as I didn't have room for it. It all seems to work though. Good luck with your new adventure! Wendy
