Lopi

This post is about the tutorial I've written about how to knit a Lopi and that you can find here
The tutorial is about the building rules of a Lopi.

Lopi is a traditionnal way of knitting sweater in Iceland, knitting in circle and with interesting colorwork parts inspired by scandinavians patterns or designs created by knitters theirselves.

I learned to Knit Lopi 20 years ago in Iceland with a friend of mine. Since then, I've been using this way to knit almost all of my sweaters. I like this way of knitting because it's going fast and the shape looks nice. And also because it's leaving no seams to sew !

I've knitted many Lopis with icelandic wools from Istex brand and especially with Alafoss Lopi yarn with which you can get some bulky and very very warm sweaters (6mm). We can knit also the Lett Lopi which is thiner (4mm).

These are the shops where I buy some icelandic yarns :

Some of my Lopis knitted with Alafoss Lopi yarn.

You can knit sweaters without colorwork parts but using the same shape as Lopi. See the pics below.

And the last one, which the building up is explained in the tutorial:

So, the illustrated tutorial I've written is to show you the main steps of the knitting and the building of a Lopi.
The aim is to help you by giving some tricks of the knitting.

I hope this tutorial will be useful for all of you !

Please, Take Care
and
See you soon !

  1. I wish I was good enough to try this out, but I'm afraid I'll to practice a bit more before... anyway, thanks for the tutorial - and marvelous Lopis you made!!
May I ask you a question? Which needles are you using in these pictures?? I see they're bamboo (at least, they look so) and circular: I've been looking forever for a good quality pair (or set) of those, as I love my straight bamboo ones, so if an experienced knitter like you could give me some advice it'd be of great help! : )
Wish you a lovely day! xx

    1. Thanks Valentina for your interest ! Well, I have many circular needles : I use some from Addi and from Prym. The last are bamboo. You can find them on online shops easily and you also can get different sizes ang length of needles you need. You also have some kit which may be practical because you just have fix the needles you need on the tips of the thread. But I think thaht kits doen't exist for bamboo circular needles...
It would be great to dare and begin one lopi ... I could help you if you want to !
Think about it !! Have a creative day !

    2. Thanks a lot! I know those brands, I think I'll get some of their needles in the next future, because I really want to learn circular knitting, but with cheaper needles the cable is too rigid and doesn't help at all...
When I'll have a bit more manual skill with them I'll definitely try a Lopi and I'll follow your amazing pattern! : )

  6. Oh wowsers your sweaters are gorgeous!! I love your pattern and colour choices! They all fit you so well too, such beautiful colour work my friend! This is kinda funny as I have been thinking of knitting a Lopi sweater the lately. We don't have any Lopi wool available in the wool shops here. I can use other yarns but the lopi is such a great yarn. You have inspired me Géraldine!!!!

  12. Hello Geraldine!

Wow, what an impressive post! Thank you so much for your tutorial, I will save it! :)
You put a lot of care and effort into your tutorial and it's really nice of you to share it with us all!

I must ask you about the 7th jumper from the top: the wool looks exactly like the jumper I just bought secondhand!!! How amazing!!! Do you remember which yarn it was (name etc)? I would love to know!!

This afternoon I started my own jumper, but it won't be a fairisle one, just a plain Alpaca one!!! It feels lovely and soft already!!!

You are an accomplished knitter!!! ;)
It is lovely to know you in blogland!!! :)))

    1. Thnaks a lot Ingrid !! well to answer your question the sweater is made with a french yarn from Cheval Blanc Brand : Baya but I don't remember the shade. I think it's "rubis". This yarn is 53% wool and 47% acryl. and need to be handwashed. You should try the Lopis, you manage to knit hats, you do them perfectly, so think a lopi like a big hat !!! Have a lovely day ... see you soon !

  14. Oh wow Géraldine, your Lopis are beautiful, I especially like the very first one, the colours are so fiery! You make me want to give it a go, but I don't think i'd have enough chance to wear something that looks so snuggly warm! Also, i'm really not that good of a knitter. Nonetheless I have bookmarked your tutorial for in the hope that one day I might get to make one! x
